How To Get Away With Murder Series Finale

How to Get Away with Murder series finale spoilers follow.

How to Get Away with Murder came to a suitably twisty end in the US yesterday (May 14), with many of the drama's long-teased flash-forwards finally playing out in full. So, what happened to Annalise? And what's the deal with Alfred Enoch's return?

As well as delivering the tragic deaths of Frank and Bonnie following a dramatic courthouse shooting, How to Get Away with Murder's finale offered some lighter moments, too. Namely, Annalise was not killed and was, of course, acquitted of murdering Asher.

Giving Annalise a happier ending than some fans had feared, it was revealed that although the funeral we'd been stealing glances of was a real funeral, it was set many years in the future, after Viola Davis' character had passed away as an old woman.

Solving the mystery of Alfred Enoch's return, it was also revealed that the actor was back not as Wes at the ceremony, but as an adult version of Wes and Laurel's son, Christopher.

Speaking to TVLine about the series finale, and how they pulled those twists out of the bag, series creator Pete Nowalk admitted that he never wanted to kill Annalise – despite Viola Davis' idea for a typical HTGAWM murder mystery.

"It had been planted in my head, I think by Viola, that it would be a great mystery if Annalise was killed and we didn't know who it was. And I agreed with her," he said. "I'd kind of always wondered, 'Should Annalise's murder be the final season?' But I also did not want to kill her."

Nowalk also explained why he felt Annalise deserved a "triumphant ending", adding: "I felt like she was such a triumphant character who beat down her problems and fought and persevered. It was really important for me that she had a triumphant ending."

As for Alfred's comeback? That was a way of killing Annalise naturally, while still toying with viewers through flash-forwards.

"[We could] kill Annalise and also stay in the style of the show," he said, "which is flashing forward. This is the ultimate flash-forward."

How to Get Away with Murder aired on ABC in the US. Seasons 1-5 are available on Netflix in the UK.
