How To Get Pappy Van Winkle
I've been searching for a bottle of the elusive and prized Pappy Van Winkle for some time, and while the distillery announced today that it will release a 25-year-old bourbon this spring, I don't expect to have much luck tracking it down.
That's because the release—the oldest ever bottled by the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery that produces Pappy—comprises only 11 barrels, resulting in just 710 bottles.
The wheated bourbon was distilled in 1989 and have been stored at the Van Winkle family distillery in Shively, Kentucky before being moved to the Buffalo Trace Distillery in 2002.
Each 750-ml bottle, which has a suggested retail price of $1,800 (but will likely sell for much more considering that the more prevalent 23-year-old bottling hovers around $3,000 at retail shops), is a handmade Glencairn Crystal Studio glass decanter that comes with silver and glass stoppers.
A wooden box created by Heritage Handcrafted completes the package; it's made with oak staves from the 11 barrels that held the bourbon as it was aging, and a metal plaque on its exterior commemorates the time that the liquid spent "asleep 25 years in the wood." Inside is a bourbon certificate of authenticity, numbered and signed by Julian Van Winkle, grandson of the original Julian P. "Pappy" Van Winkle, Sr., who founded the distillery.
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime offering," Van Winkle said of the 710 bottles, which will begin shipping in April.
Good luck finding one.
